Post image for Obituary: Stephen Owen Coldwell, 75

Stephen Owen Coldwell 75, a resident of Southborough since 1967, died on Friday, March 13, 2015, at home with his family, following a 19-month battle with brain cancer. He will be remembered by his wife and best friend of nearly 50 years, Marjorie (Denham) Coldwell; his two children, Laura Coldwell-Stewart and Stephen Dana Coldwell; daughter-in-law Michelle (Moran) Coldwell, son-in-law James Stewart; and his two grandchildren, Robert Stewart and Sarah Coldwell, as well as a veritable army of loving family and friends.

Born in New York City, NY, on May 7, 1939, to Raymond and Dorothy Coldwell, Stephen and his brothers, Raymond and Rodney, moved to the Saxonville neighborhood of Framingham in the 40s, just in time for the birth of their sister Sara. He attended Framingham High School, where he served in Boys’ State in his junior year, and graduated in 1957. After graduating from University of Rhode Island, he moved to Southborough in 1961. He met Marjorie, the love of his life, on Halloween 1965, and the two were married at Pilgrim Congregational Church in Southborough in 1967.

He coached Southborough youth soccer in the late 70s and was a much-loved leader in the town’s Cub Scout and Boy Scout programs in the 80s. For more than 40 years, he served in the dual roles of Treasurer and Shipper for Middlesex Research, the family’s textile business in Hudson. After his retirement in 2002, he devoted much of his time to service work, including terms as Financial Secretary for Pilgrim Church (he was still Assistant Treasurer at the time of his death), Inventory Manager for the Southborough Food Pantry, and significant work with Habitat for Humanity. He enjoyed travel, country music, puzzles and reading, and his home away from home was the beach in Mattapoisett. More than anything, he lived for tending his vegetable garden and spending time with his family. As a grandfather, he was not content to simply watch Sarah and Robby grow up—he took immeasurable joy in being an active part of their adventures. He was a loving, thoughtful and funny husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend, and he will be missed.

A memorial service will be held at Pilgrim Church on Wednesday, March 18, at 11 a.m., followed by a burial and a reception for those who wish to attend.

In lieu of flowers, Stephen asked that donations be made to Pilgrim Congregational Church, 15 Common Street, Southborough, MA 01772. A memorial service will be held at Pilgrim Church on Wednesday, March 18, at 11 a.m., followed by a burial and a reception for those who wish to attend.

Obituary: Jonathan R. Karis, 58

Jonathan R. Karis, 58, of Southborough, passed away unexpectedly at his home on April 2, 2015 after a courageous two-and-a-half year battle with cancer.

He is survived by his wife Nancy; his children Matt and Kirsten; his mother Doris, a sister, Kathy and her husband John. He was predeceased by his father Christopher.

Jon was born in Boston and graduated from Harvard College in 1979. After a year of teaching biology at his alma mater Archbishop Williams High School in Braintree, Jon decided to go to law school. After graduating from Georgetown University Law Center in 1983, he practiced business and corporate law in Boston for 32 years as a partner first at Hutchins & Wheeler and then at Nixon Peabody. He was a teacher and coach at heart and enjoyed helping new associates grow in their practice of the law.

Jon was passionate about his family. He met his wife, Nancy, in law school and they have been inseparable for the past 32 years. According to Jon, his best investment was his marriage license followed closely by his Patriots season tickets.

Jon was an intensely dedicated fan of his children Matt and Kirsten, and their sports teams. Jon never missed a game whether it was high school sports at Noble & Greenough, baseball at Gettysburg College and the Lexington Blue Sox, or Colby College women’€™s lacrosse. He could always be found pacing quietly down the third base line or sideline with a superstitious pile of twigs and lucky pennies praying for strikes to be thrown or a defensive stop to be made. Regardless of the outcome of a game, Jon was just happy to be there and watch his kids compete. They will forever be grateful for his unrelenting encouragement, pregame hugs and handshakes, and devout support.

Jon was a loyal son to his parents Christopher and Doris until his father’€™s passing three years ago. Jon continued to care for and prioritize seeing Doris even through the height of his illness and recovery from surgeries. He loved to visit with her as often as possible, fortuitously including the day before he passed.

A funeral mass will be held at St. Ignatius of Loyola at Boston College, 28 Commonwealth Ave, Chestnut Hill at 10:30am on Thursday, April 9 followed by a private burial. Instead of a wake Jon’€™s family invites friends and family to a reception at their home Friday, April 10 from 1:00 to 7:00pm for those wishing to offer condolences and celebrate his life.

Kirsten will be running the 2015 Boston Marathon in Jon’€™s honor. As a member of Team Eye and Ear, her fundraising will benefit the Department of Head and Neck Surgical Oncology at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary where Jon underwent major surgery in September and received wonderful care.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Kirsten’€™s marathon fundraising through the following website: https://www.crowdrise.com/teameyeandear/fundraiser/kirstenkaris
