I was saddened this week to learn that Southborough lost two well known members of our community – John Wilson and Kate Matison.

I can’t say anything about either public servant that won’t be better said in the obituaries and tributes that will follow.

Each of them deserve special attention. With the news of both falling on the same day, I plan to pin this to the top of the home page to make readers aware. As I post obituaries/tributes, I will add those links.

John Wilson contributed in 2010

Many of you know John Wilson from his more than 20 years presiding as our Town Meeting Moderator. And many of you know him from his service in countless ceremonies as the Commander of the American Legion Bagley Fay Post 161. He served as our Town as a Veteran’s Agent and on many committees over the years. His most recent big project for the Town was successfully unveiled this fall – updating the Town’s All War Memorial to acknowledge service in the “Global War on Terrorism”.

I learned yesterday that Wilson had passed away on Tuesday. I was asked to wait for the official announcement. His obituary has been posted, and I’ll be sharing that shortly following this post. (You can also click here to open it directly on the Morris Funeral Home website.)

Kate Matison (contributed by Southborough Historical Commission)

Kate Matison was a longtime, active member of the Southborough Historical Commission (just voted in as Chair just last month) and the Southborough Historical Society. One of her most recent public accomplishments was a project to restore headstones at the Old Burial Ground.

Matison also passed away this Tuesday. Her obituary is yet to be posted. I learned of her death this morning through a tribute released by the Historical Commission. I will share that later this morning. (In the meantime, you can view it here on the Southborough Historical Society’s website.)

Post image for Southborough Historical Commission remembers Kate Matison

The Southborough Historical Commission issued an announcement last night mourning longtime member Kate Matison.

The statement includes news that they will be holding a reception in her honor. And an obituary from her family has yet to be issued. So stay tuned for future posts.:

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Kate Matison, a longtime member of the Southborough Historical Commission and highly regarded member of the community.

Born in Australia in 1948, Kate immigrated to the United States in 1988 and settled in Southborough in 1993. She completed two Master’s degrees from Boston University: one in Art History and one in Preservation Studies.

Always an exceptionally skilled and enthusiastic photographer, Kate lived in London for a period and worked at the renowned Photographer’s Gallery.
Her interest in preservation sprang from her studies in art history, and she went on to combine talent as a photographer with her preservation work. Kate spent countless hours meticulously photographing historical structures, often providing a complete record of buildings that were later demolished. She was actively engaged in the Vernacular Architecture Forum, and she implemented and moderated their widely followed Facebook page.

Kate brought her boundless energy and commitment to the Southborough Historical Commission in 2007. It is impossible to overstate her impact on the Commission and the Town of Southborough. In 2012, she became the Vice Chair, and she held that position until she was recently voted Chair.

Some of Kate’s accomplishments include South Union School’s addition to the National Historic Register, updating the Historical Properties Survey, the Preservation Restriction for 84 Main Street with the Massachusetts Historical Commission, the application for Southborough’s National Register Historic District, the recent preservation of the Old Burial Ground, advocacy for Fayville Hall and Peter’s Annex preservation, and documenting numerous buildings since demolished or renovated.

Since 2015, Kate served as the CPC representative for the Historical Commission, Members of both groups relied upon her expertise and greatly appreciated her contributions.

It is rare to find an individual who is willing to work so tirelessly for the growing good of a community for so many years. Future residents of Southborough will benefit from her talents and expertise as they are able to appreciate the historical character she strived to preserve. It is our hope that she will be remembered as fondly as we remember Kate Matison: dedicated, tireless, witty, wise, and above all, a dear friend.

The Southborough Historical Society will host a reception honoring Kate in the coming weeks. Details will be announced as soon as they are available.

Post image for Obituary: Lois E. (Johnson) Jacobson, 86

Lois E. (Johnson) Jacobson passed away peacefully on April 20, 2019, after a short period of declining health; she was 86 years old. Lois was the devoted wife to Chester F. Jacobson; a true love story that they shared for over 60 years.

Lois was born and raised in Worcester, a daughter to the late Oscar and Marion (Sladdin) Johnson. After graduating from Worcester’s South High, Lois earned her degree in nursing from the former Worcester Hospital’s School of Nursing. Lois had a passion for nursing and caring for others, a trait that she would apply to her entire life. She was known for being driven and goal oriented, for her loving heart and dedication to her family and friends. “There is always room for one more at her table!” is a phrase that signifies her generous spirit and open-door policy at 10 Pinecone Lane.

After their marriage, Chester’s work required relocating several times and Lois would travel the country with him, finding employment there as a public health nurse. In the early 1970’s they moved to Southborough where they became active members of the Southborough community. Lois was an excellent cook and enjoyed being part of the Gourmet Club and member of the Secret Pals. She was a longtime active member of Pilgrim Congregational Church and held several leadership roles in Woman’s Ministry. A talented artist, Lois expressed herself artistically through many mediums including stained glass, painting and embroidery. While not an adventurer by nature, Lois would follow and share Chester’s adventures to some the greatest destinations around the globe. From hot air ballooning across the Serengeti, to exploring the wonders of Egypt, their trips together highlighted their love and friendship for one another.

In 2009, Chester and Lois moved to the Southgate Community in Shrewsbury where they continued to remain active in the many day trips and activities offered. With a fondness of trips to the casinos Lois never found a slot machine she didn’t like.

Lois is survived by her husband Chester, two sons, Kyle Jacobson, his wife Tricia and their children Christian and Kevin of Northborough; Kurt Jacobson, his wife Rachael and their children Kurt, Jr, Tyler, Emma, Christopher and Kelly of Sturbridge; a daughter, Karen Ubowski and her children Michael, RJ and Jenny of Harleysville, PA and her beloved niece and casino buddy- Sharon. Lois’ sister Betty Kennen preceded her in death.
Lois’ family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Notre Dame Hospice for their compassionate care shown to Lois. Memorial considerations may be to Notre Dame Hospice, 555 Plantation St, Worcester, MA 01605.

Calling hours will be held from 4-7pm on Thursday, April 25th, at Hays Funeral Home, 56 Main Street, Northborough. A funeral home service will be held at 10am on Friday, April 26th. Burial will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Please visit www.HaysFuneralHome.com to leave a condolence for Lois’ family.
